Our Hammered  & Silver Coin Finds

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all of the Weekend Wanderers members who have given me permission to display their finds on this web page.

This page was last updated 3 September 2007

Thank you to Charles Wood who sent in the excellent pictures and text below.

Henry 7                 Henry 7

I got this great Henry VII half-groat dated around 1500 from a club dig in July. I picked up a really worn hammered penny early on in the dig, then got this beaut in the same spot just five minutes later. It turned out to be a quiet dig and everyone left at 2pm when thunderstorms came in, leaving just five of us detecting. A cloudburst soaked the whole area and within a short space of time I had found a Henry VII sovereign penny and another club member had found a second Henry VII half-groat. 3 hammereds in a day - it just goes to show there isn't any such thing as an 'empty' field!

Many Thanks to Paul Lovegrove for sending the pictures shown below of a  Charles 1st Crown dated 1630.

Charles found this one at a recent club dig in hampshire

could identify it?  It was about 4 inches below the surface and I found it with my Whites XL Pro.

Cut Short Cross

Thank you to Paul Lindfield who found the cut half shown below on a recent club dig

We  think this may be a Henry 1 cross fluery type.

Many Thanks to Michael Skinner who sent me the pictures below of his very first silver find which was revealed by his Minelab Explorer II

Edward I penny       Edward I penny

The coin was Identified for us by Paul Shields as  an Edward I penny minted in London
(CIVITAS LONDON). Paul says ... I am reasonably sure of this because of the style E at the beginning obverse legend for EDW, Edward II's are different. From what I can see in the picture the king's drape consist of two inward pointing triangles which join in the middle and although I am not exactly sure on the class without seeing the coin for myself I think I can narrow it down to the following. Classes 2A, 3D or 4C. ..........  Thanks Paul

Many thanks to Gilles Belley for sending me the excellent pictures below.

William Conqueror              William Conqueror

It was nice to hear from Member Phill Jones that he had found his first ever Hammered silver coin on one of our recent digs.

Henry   Henry

Thanks to Pete Brown for sending us the pictures above of his recent Henry 8th hammered silver circa 1509.This coin is of the first coinage struck under Henry VIII but confusingly the portrait stayed Henry VII until I think his second coinage where you will see the younger bust of Henry VIII.

Pip found the coin above at one of our recent Buckinghamshire digs.

Club member Paul Shields was trying out his new Whites MXT  at a club dig in Hampshire and found his first hammered penny pictured below

Edward I Penny 1272

Paul thinks this coin is of Edward I minted in Canterbury possibly type 2 or 3 1280 onwards but could do with some help to properly identify it. Paul says, You know how hard it is to identify these Eddie pennies there's so many different types! I have translated the inscription as: Obverse EDW R ANGL DNS HYB, Edward King of England Lord of Ireland. Reverse CIVI TAS CANTOR, City of Canterbury. I hope you can help with this one, even though I have reasonable experience identifying these coins it is still very confusing.

Thanks to Gerry for sending in the pictures below of a beautiful  Groat of Henry 6, not clipped or worn, found by Richard ( UK Explorers site owner)  at our Creslow Rally.

Elizabeth 1573

Wayne has been a member for about 3 months and found the Hammered shown below on a recent club dig.

Hammered          Hammered

The coin as can be seen is dated 1628 (Charles 1 reign) but does not seem to be one of his coins have you see one like this before ??

Thanks to Dave Ebbage who writes ......I am wondering if the first coin of 1628 might be a Spanish real as the symbol could be the bundle of arrows indicating Isabellas family.

I have had another e-mail from Zoltan in Holland who stated that this coin is not a Spanish real, but a so called "bezemstuiver" (broompenny) from the province Overijssel ( in latin Trasisvlania) in the Netherlands. So it's a Dutch coin.

Thanks to JPN for sending me the excellent picture above showing his finds from a recent Hampshire Wanderers dig.

Half Quarter & Bull Head

John Has identified the coins above as Henry? Short Cross cut 1/2 & 1/4 and a Bull head sixpence dated 1819.

Many thanks to John who sent an e-mail stating ....This wee coin was unearthed at a recent Hertfordshire club dig ( What quirk of History resulted in the coin being in rural Hertfordshire ....who knows?)

Spanish half Reale

John had the coin identified by Sally Worrell, the Finds Liason Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme as a Spanish half Reale of Ferdinand and Isabella which was in circulation in the late 16th or possibly early 17th century.

The fine pictures below were sent to me by WWDC member Steven Fenton.

Henry 3rd Voided Long Cross Penny

The picture above shows a Henry 3rd Voided Long Cross Penny  which came up from a depth of 6ins

Many thanks to Peter Brown for sending me the pictures below of his son Benjamin's first hammered coin find and what a first find it was !!

Henry 6th 1422 -1471              Henry 6th 1422 -1471

Young Benjamin Brown aged 12 parked up with his dad at a recent wanderers dig and got out their detectors, Benjamin got out his Bounty hunter Tracker 1V which hadn't seen the light of day for about 8 months. He walked away from the car and after about 30 metres got his first signal, he dug up his find and came running over to Dad shouting is this a Hammered, Peter looked in his hand and said yes it was, he was over the moon and so he should have been as the coin turned out to be a Henry 6th penny or half penny dated 1422 -1471of the London mint, annulet issue.

Well done Benjamin and we hope this is the first of many for you.

Just in case you didn't know .....

Henry VI was the only child of Henry V and Catherine of Valois, born on December 6, 1421. He married Margaret of Anjou in 1445; the union produced one son, Edward, who was killed in battle one day before Henry's execution. Henry came to the throne as an infant after the early death of his father; in name, he was king of both England and France, but a protector ruled each realm. He was educated by Richard Beauchamp beginning in 1428. The whole of Henry's reign was involved with retaining both of his crowns - in the end, he held neither.

Hostilities in France continued, but momentum swung to the French with the appearance of Joan of Arc in 1428. The seventeen year old was instrumental in rescuing the French Dauphin Charles in 1429; he was crowned at Reims as Charles VII, and she was burned at the stake as a heretic. English losses in Brittany (1449), Normandy (1450) and Gascony (1453) led to the conclusion of the Hundred Years' War in 1453. Henry lost his claim to all French soil except for Calais.

The Wars of the Roses began in full during Henry's reign. In 1453, Henry had an attack of the hereditary mental illness that plagued the French house of Valois; Richard, Duke of York , was made protector of the realm during the illness. His wife Margaret, a rather headstrong woman, alienated Richard upon Henry's recovery and Richard responded by attacking and defeating the queen's forces at St. Albans in 1455. Richard captured the king in 1460 and forced him to acknowledge Richard as heir to the crown. Henry escaped, joined the Lancastrian forces and attacked at Towton in March 1461, only to be defeated by the Yorks. Richard's son, Edward IV , was proclaimed king; Margaret and Henry were exiled to Scotland. They were captured in 1465 and imprisoned in the Tower of London until 1470. Henry was briefly restored to power in September 1470. Edward , Prince of Wales , died after his final victory at Tewkesbury on May 20, 1471 and Henry returned to the Tower. The last Lancastrian king was murdered the following day.

Many thanks to John for sending me the picture and text below, when John found this coin it was bent.

Henry 3rd

This wee Henry 3rd Hammered dated around 1216 - 1272 was buckled so I used the gas-torch till cherry red / drop into cold water / press between 2 blocks of hardwood. Works a treat but not for the faint hearted!

David Roberts sent me the pictures and text below of the Edward 3rd Groat he found recently in Buckinghamshire on one of our digs.

Edward 3rd Groat          Edward 3rd Groat

David believes that this coin is dated 1351 and was minted in London

The Elizabeth 1st Groat pictured below was found recently by Gerry on one of our Bedfordshire digs. As you can see in the picture on the left the coin had quite a severe bend in it which has been straightened as seen in the picture on the right.

( See the text below from Gerry's e-mail )

Liz 1 Bent               Liz1Straight

"Hi Paul here is a coin I found in Bedfordshire and as you can see it was bent at 90deg BUT a friend used the following to straighten it out. NOT for the Faint Hearted BUT IT WORKS
Step-1 heat the coin with a small blowtorch till its cherry red
Step-2 when it gets to cherry red drop it straight in to a glass of cold water
Step-3 put it between 2 bits of cloth covered planks and stand on it
It should straighten without cracking as mine did.
Oh and I was told if I want to restore the old colour to drop it into some bleach."

It should be noted that this method is NOT recommended by the Weekend Wanderers Detecting Club.
