Our Thimble Finds

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all of the Weekend Wanderers members who have given me permission to display their finds on this web page.

This page was last updated 12 November 2006

Club member Paul Lovegrove found this very nice Beehive thimble on a recent club dig in Oxfordshire

Beehive Thimble

The thimble is in good condition and probably darte back to the 15th or 16th Century.

Adrian Oates ( our resident Thimble finder ) found the lovely silver thimble shown below at a club recent dig in Hampshire.

Silver Thimble

Adrian found this thimble which we think is Victorian with his Whites MXT at a depth of about 4 inches, the thimble was squashed flat and already had the top cut off it when Adrian found it, I think you'll agree Adrian has done a very good job on restoring this thimble.

Thanks again to Adrian Oates for sending me the pictures below of a near perfect medieval beehive thimble - no serious abrasions and still completely circular.

Found on a club dig in Buckinghamshire after battling against the rain and mud.
Small (1.5cm diameter, 1cm high) but perfectly formed!

Another Adrian Oates thimble ....

Medieval Thimble

This one an open top medieval thimble found by Adrian last summer on one of our Wendover digs.  Adrian was using a C-Scope CS1M at the time and the thimble was only a couple of inches down.

It is nice to see a good example of a ring type thimble found by Paul Shields on a recent club outing.

Thanks for sending me the picture Paul

Weekend Wanderers member Brian  found 3 thimbles on a recent dig, nothing unusual in that I hear you say, but these three were one inside the other as shown below.

Thank you to Jerry Morris for the beautifully presented Silver thimble pictured below.

This one is quite nice and should clean up well.

The beautiful thimble pictured below was found by one of our club members recently and has been dated 1898 and is from Chester.

This lovely example of a silver thimble was found by Weekend Wanderers member Bill at our Bedfordshire dig on the 24th of March.
